Vancouver's Summer Lights fireworks display on Friday is estimated to have attracted approximately 230,000 people, according to initial figures from producer BandLive. This one-night event was established by the city to continue offering a free public fireworks experience in 2026, following the discontinuation of the 33-year-old Celebration of Lights festival.

The City of Vancouver has indicated that free, non-ticketed public events face significant financial challenges due to the lack of revenue generation. Despite this, the city expressed dedication to collaborating with community partners, sponsors, and various levels of government to secure a viable funding strategy for preserving this tradition. Officials emphasized the integral role of community events in the cultural and social landscape of Vancouver.

Vancouver Police reported that the large crowds present on Friday did not lead to any unusual incidents, describing the night as comparable to any other busy Friday. Constable Darren Wong noted that prior experience with the Celebration of Lights, combined with preparedness efforts for events like the FIFA World Cup, contributed to the successful management of the crowds and ensured a safe environment.

In February, Vancouver city council approved up to $2 million in municipal funding for the single-day fireworks festival. Mayor Ken Sim had previously argued that the multi-day Celebration of Light historically drew substantial regional crowds to the downtown core. However, some council members voiced concerns that allocating funds to a one-day event contradicted the city's current budget, which prioritized austerity and addressed staff reductions due to financial limitations.
