Ontario Wildfire Situation Shows Improvement Despite Ongoing Challenges

The wildfire situation in northern Ontario is showing signs of improvement, with over 80 fires successfully extinguished in the last two weeks. However, 159 fires are still active, and 30 of those are currently burning out of control.

More than 150 Ontario fire crews are actively engaged in suppression efforts, receiving assistance from recent cooler, rainy weather and over 100 firefighters who recently arrived from Mexico. Despite these efforts, 14 communities were forced to evacuate due to the fires, and while five have since returned home and another is in the process of doing so, over 2,000 people remain displaced.

First Nations leaders have called for a public inquiry into the province's wildfire response, alleging that timely support was not provided to communities that evacuated themselves. In response, Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris stated that the province conducts a thorough review after each fire season but emphasized that the current priority is fire suppression. Harris did not confirm whether the upcoming review would be made public.
