WestJet Cancels Flights Amidst Approaching Strike Deadline

WestJet has initiated cancellations of 81 flights scheduled for Saturday in anticipation of a potential strike by its flight attendants. The airline stated this measure is to prevent passengers and crew from becoming stranded. Negotiations are ongoing between WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents approximately 4,400 flight attendants.

The union provided a 72-hour strike notice, which, if no agreement is reached by Sunday morning, could lead to a work stoppage. WestJet responded with a lockout notice. The airline has presented a proposal that it claims includes a significant wage increase and improvements to scheduling and travel provisions.

However, the union has indicated that the current proposal does not fully address all of their concerns. A key point of contention in the negotiations appears to be compensation for ground duties, an issue that has been a focus in recent labour disputes within the airline industry.

Passengers affected by the cancellations are advised to check their flight status. WestJet is offering one-time fee-free changes or cancellations for flights booked between July 30 and August 4. Refund or re-accommodation will be provided for those whose flights are cancelled or significantly delayed, though the specifics of refunds may vary based on ticket type and booking method.

Travellers who booked directly with WestJet will be notified of changes via their contact information. Those who used third-party booking services are directed to contact their agent for any adjustments.
