Youth Flock to CNE Job Fair Amidst High Unemployment

The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto held its annual job fair this past Wednesday, drawing a massive crowd of young applicants hours before the event's official opening. The CNE reported receiving nearly 50,000 applications for its 5,000 available summer positions, a tenfold increase compared to the number of jobs offered.

This surge in interest highlights the challenging youth job market in the Greater Toronto Area, where unemployment rates reached nearly 17% in April. CNE CEO Mark Holland emphasized the organization's commitment to providing young people with crucial first-time employment opportunities, noting that 80% of summer hires are typically youth.

To accommodate the high volume of job seekers and expand its support, the CNE has broadened the fair's scope this year. It now includes participation from external agencies like Metrolinx and the YMCA, offering additional resources such as resume assistance and professional headshot services. The CNE aims to grow the fair further in future years, positioning it as a platform for youth development beyond just immediate hiring.

The fair aims to fill various seasonal roles, including positions in retail, food service, game operations, and as guides. Some opportunities extend beyond the CNE's 18-day duration, offering longer-term employment prospects. The event itself runs from August 21 to September 7.

Young applicants, some as young as 16, expressed the difficulty of finding employment, with many having applied to dozens of jobs without success. The early morning queues at the Enercare Centre demonstrated a strong desire among youth to secure summer employment and gain valuable work experience.
