Casino Workers Strike for Wage Parity in Ontario

Around 900 casino workers in Ajax and Pickering have gone on strike, demanding equal pay for equal work. The employees, represented by Unifor Local 1090, are seeking wage parity with their counterparts at other casinos operated by Great Canadian Entertainment, including the Great Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto. Union president Greg Weaver stated that workers at the Ajax and Pickering locations earn substantially less than those at the Toronto facility for similar roles.

The strike began after union members overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement that proposed a 14 percent wage increase over four years. Workers feel this offer is insufficient to close the existing pay gap, with some positions reportedly earning $2 to $4 less per hour compared to the Toronto location. The union has emphasized that the strike will continue until a fair agreement is reached, with a focus on achieving wage parity.

Great Canadian Entertainment has acknowledged the ongoing negotiations and expressed regret in failing to reach an agreement despite their efforts. The company stated that the casinos will remain open during the labour dispute, though some services might be affected. They remain committed to further discussions with the union and to ensuring a positive guest experience.
