This marks the meaningful day the Canadian government officially recognized the Republic of Korea as the only legitimate government on the Korean Peninsula, making it the first time the two countries were acknowledged as official partners on the diplomatic stage. This declaration provided tremendous support to the newly independent Korea in solidifying its position within the international community, and it served as a strong cornerstone for the two nations to build political and economic trust leading up to the establishment of formal diplomatic relations in 1963.

On this day, the Art Vancouver International Art Fair held its grand opening at the Vancouver Convention Centre in Canada. With a large turnout of Korean galleries along with numerous established and emerging artists, it is considered a proud example of directly showcasing the explosive energy of Korean contemporary art to the Canadian public.

This day holds significance in the history of exchange between Korea and Canada in multiple ways.

1. April 12, 1970. This marks the passing of Dr. Frank William Schofield, a veterinarian and missionary from Canada. He is the only foreign national to be laid to rest in the Patriots' burial plot at the Seoul National Cemetery in the Republic of Korea.
2. April 12, 2014. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Canada, a publication celebration was held for The History of Koreans in Canada. This book meticulously chronicles everything from the stories of the dispatch of Canadian missionaries in the 19th century to the evolution of immigration policies across different eras and the development of the Korean immigrant community.
