September 7, 1955

The Royal Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Sioux departed Korean waters for home, officially bringing to a close more than five years of Canadian naval service in the Korean War and post-armistice patrol operations. HMCS Sioux was the last Canadian warship to complete maritime interdiction, coastal bombardment operations since the outbreak of the war, and armistice surveillance missions. This marked the conclusion of an era in which more than 3,600 Canadian naval personnel served at sea, transitioning bilateral relations from wartime assistance to a long-term partnership of peacekeeping and diplomatic cooperation.
